I have read up to page 141 for my book, My Sisters Keeper and it is very good right now! Right from the beginning it had your attention. Anna was the first to talk about her life and what has happened, so right from the beginning you are just like woah, I want to know more! I also like how Jodi Picoult writes her books because it will talk about one characters opinion/life/how they feel, etc... and then switch to a different character and talk about them and how they relate or what there side of the story was. It's very interesting and definitely not boring. As I read-on, it kept getting deeper into detail about the family, what has happened in the past and present, how everyone feels, etc.
The book so far has been based on Brian and Sara, who are a married couple and their 3 kids, Kate, Anna and Jesse, who is their only son. Jesse would be the oldest, then its Kate and then Anna. It may seem like they have a happy family, but really... they don't. Kate was diagnosed with leukemia at a very young age, and as most people know, there is a very slim chance you will survive. They were all heart broken. They knew eventually they would need a kidney donor for her, but they didn't know who or how they would get it because they have to have the perfect match up and who knew how long it would take to find one. So one day Brian and Sara decided to have another baby, but not just any regular pregnancy, they wanted to match up Kate and their new babies chromosomes, etc, so that this new baby would be able to be a donor for Kate. They found out she was a girl and they named her Anna. Different news reporters have found out about what they were doing and wanted to interview them about it. Everyone was so shocked and thought that it was wrong of them to do. But according to them, it wasn't. They all started growing up a little bit and Kate was still really sick and having her problems , Jesse tried to stay away and Anna was finally realizing that the only reason she was even alive was so that they could just use her to be Kate's donor. She was so hurt. She didn't want to be the donor or have surgery or have them keep poking her with needles. She felt like no one really cared about her so, she went out, found an attorney, told them the situation and brought her parents to court. Of course she doesn't want her sister dead but she was sick of being used and not feeling loved. Her mom was furious, but could do nothing about it. Anna wasn't really getting along with her mom after she took them to court. Her mom was always on Kate's side and never listened or cared what Anna said. Anna ran away for awhile to get her mind off things. Later that night Kate ended up back in the hospital and not doing well at all. Anna was so scared she was going to lose her but so much was running through her head... she had no idea what to do. A couple days later Kate was doing better and the doctors were trying to figure out what else they could do to help her, like always. It was a constant cycle that kept happening.
While I'm reading this story I have a lot of mixed emotions. Sometimes I'm really happy because one of the characters will bring up a good memory of the past and their childhood and it really just warms your heart. But other times, I get really mad and want to ring the parents neck because it really doesn't seem like they care about Jesse or Anna. Yes, Kate is in bad condition, but they have two other children that need love and attention too and they never give it to them and that's why they are in this mess because Anna was pretty much made exactly how they wanted her so she could save Kate's life, and they never care to listen to how she feels about it or what type of pain they put her through. I've also caught myself get a little teary eyed a few times because of what Kate has gone through and how Anna wants to help her sister but doesn't want to give her her kidney and she's scared it will be all her fault if she dies and that she will be lost without her sister. That's why I think this book is so good because it keeps you interested and never gets boring.
